UIDAI FACES SUIT FOR DATA LEAK

UIDAI is mandated to issue an easily verifiable 12 digit random number as Unique Identity – Aadhaar to all Residents of India

The two-judge bench headed by S Ravindra Bhat has agreed to hear the petition, filed by a lawyer,  alleging leak of sensitive data from the World’s largest biometric ID operator, UIDAI’s system.

Delhi High Court has asked the unique identification development authority of India, which handles sensitive data of millions of people across the country, to submit their response in six weeks and HC will hear the petition on 19th November.

India has, so far, collected biometric and demographic details of over 1.1 billion people. Despite Government’s claims of data protection measure and upbeat discussion of Right To Privacy, unending reports of leaks have raised concerns over the security of the huge database that is used for services ranging from opening a bank account to getting a cooking gas connection.

In his petition, Shamnad Basheer has urged the court to form an expert panel to investigate and quantify financial damages caused due to the data leak.
