CHIEF COMMISSIONER CALLS FOR A LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR SIMULTANEOUS POLLS
Ruling out the possibility of carrying out simultaneous elections in the near future, Chief election commissioner (CEC) O P Rawat stated that the parallel polls are not possible without a legal framework as an extension or curtailment of the term of assemblies will require a constitutional amendment.
His remarks came a day after ruling Bharatiya Janata Party made a fresh push to hold Lok Sabha and assembly polls together.
The CEC said the poll panel would continue to deliver its responsibility of conducting elections whenever term of the state assemblies come to an end.
